Leafhound, a band often revered as a major influence by music aficionados, is known for their original album ‘Grower Of Mushrooms’. A compelling blend of hard rock, psychedelica, stoner rock, and blues, the album still holds up today, showcasing the bands they influenced. Without Leafhound, the trajectory of hard rock in the seventies and eighties may have been vastly different. Following ‘Grower Of Mushrooms’, their second album ‘Unleashed’ emerged 37 years later, displaying a more refined yet powerful blend of hard rock and psych. Now, after a mere 18 years, Leafhound returns with their new album ‘Once Bitten’, proving that the band, though not prolific, is always worth a listen.

The current lineup, consisting of Pete French on vocals, Luke Rayner on guitar, Peter Herbert on bass, and Dominic French on drums, delivers an exceptional musical experience. Pete French’s vocals remain as robust as ever, despite his British roots being overshadowed by a distinctly American accent that adds a unique color to the music. Luke Rayner impresses with his skillful guitar work, laying down intense riffs, power chords, and searing solos, while the rhythm section of Peter Herbert and Dominic French provides a solid foundation with furious breaks and pulsating basslines.

The songs on ‘Once Bitten’, either written by Pete French alone or in collaboration with other band members, are a collection of excellent rock radio offerings that showcase Leafhound’s musical prowess. Standout tracks such as ‘Hold Back The Night’ highlight French’s vocal prowess against a funky backdrop, ‘Chain Gang’ delivers a powerful rock anthem, and ‘Burn The House Down’ sets the stage with an explosive opening that encapsulates the band’s strengths.

While Leafhound’s style may not be groundbreaking, it’s important to recognize that they were pioneers of heavy rock, predating many American acts and contemporaries like Deep Purple and The Groundhogs. Their sound remains fresh, powerful, and utterly dedicated to their craft. In truth, listening to Leafhound is an exhilarating experience that had me spinning around the room with excitement, a testament to their enduring appeal.
