J. Dilla Gets Street Named After Him in Detroit
Recently, the city of Detroit paid tribute to the legendary music producer and rapper, J. Dilla, with a special street naming ceremony. The event took place in his hometown, where the corner of East Nevada and Charest was officially renamed “J Dilla Street.”
Ja’Mya Yancey, Dilla’s daughter, expressed her thoughts on the long-overdue recognition of her father. She mentioned that it was essential for their family to preserve his legacy and ensure that his genius was not forgotten. She shared how heartening it was to see people supporting the initiative when gathering signatures to honor him.
The author of “Dilla Time,” Dan Charnas, also shared his excitement about the event on social media, acknowledging the effort put into officially recognizing James Dewitt Yancey’s work and legacy by the City of Detroit. He specifically commended Ja’Mya Yancey, Ty-Monae Whitelow, Joylette Hunter, Detroit councilwoman Mary Sheffield, and other individuals for their contributions. He also recognized the efforts of artists like Questlove, Common, Pete Rock, Karriem Riggins, and Jessica Care Moore in making the street renaming possible.
J. Dilla, known for his work as a prominent producer during the mid-1990s, was a member of the group Slum Village and went on to collaborate with renowned artists such as Janet Jackson, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and many others. As part of the Soulquarians music collective, his influence extended across a wide range of artists in the industry. Unfortunately, Dilla passed away at the age of 32 due to complications from lupus and TTP.
