ca’s Trevor Rabin and formed Cinema, a group that eventually morphed into Yes (with the addition of singer Jon Anderson). XYZ never completed an album before folding.

Page then formed the Firm with ex-Free and Bad Company singer, Paul Rodgers. The group released two studio albums and a live set. In 1998, Page played a series of shows with Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant, which led to a collaboration for a new album.

Regarding why Page hasn’t released any new music this millennium, there are many possible reasons. Page’s perfectionism, which is one reason that the debut Led Zeppelin album still sounds as good as it does, is one that is commonly cited. Page always struck one as a perfectionist in the studio. It’s been said that when producer Andy Johns offered feedback to one of Page’s guitar solos, knowning that a retake would be necessary, Page insisted they keep the solo and find a way to get around the problems with it. A noble attitude, but it’s one that can lead to albums not coming out on time, or ever.

In a 2010 interview with Gibson.com, Page said: “I think it’s extremely unlikely, given the expectations of people that have grown up listening to the band my previous outfit, Led Zeppelin, that really, anything is going to be as well received as that was.” In the same interview, he said he had written a lot of music since the ‘80s but “the hurdle is getting the other people and the singers to make the album live and breathe,” adding that Robert Plant wasn’t the person to do that.

So, it seems that one of the great guitarists of all time might be a victim of his own past success. He is someone whose guitar solos are among the most famous ever recorded, but he is someone who is more of a legend than a contemporary hitmaker. He built up such a powerful legacy that even he might not be able to top it – at least, not in his mind.
