Riverside boasts a vibrant music scene with numerous talented individuals. A band that stands out as a significant influence on the local music scene is The Bellrays. This power duo was formed in 1990 by Lisa Kekaula and Bob Vennum, both alumni of the University of California, Riverside (UCR), with degrees in English.

Their journey began at Bull ‘n’ Mouth, where Bob first laid eyes on Lisa while she worked there. This chance encounter marked the beginning of a musical partnership fueled by a shared love for music. Bob, who already had a band called The Rose Thorns, invited Lisa to join his band after witnessing her talent in the UCR jazz band. Together, they rebranded as The Bellrays, a name that would soon become synonymous with high-energy rock performances in Riverside.

Their primary focus was always on the music, rather than fame or success. The couple’s dedication to creating quality music and putting their passion first set them apart in the music industry. Their commitment to their craft led them to perform at iconic Riverside venues like Spanky’s and The Go-Go Club, leaving their mark on the local music scene.

Over the years, The Bellrays have shared the stage with renowned bands such as The White Stripes and Pixies, showcasing their unique sound and electrifying performances. Recently, they embarked on a North American tour with punk icons Social Distortion, culminating in a memorable New Year’s Eve performance at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium. Their love for Riverside shines through as they praise the venue’s exceptional acoustics, comparing it to some of the best concert spots in the country.

Their latest album, “Heavy Steady Go!”, released under their record label Sweet Gee Records, embodies their signature multi-genre sound. With tracks like “California” and “I Fall Down”, the album showcases Lisa’s powerhouse vocals and Bob’s impressive guitar skills. Each song reflects the band’s musical philosophy, where blues serves as the teacher and punk as the preacher, blending emotion, energy, talent, and intellect into a captivating musical experience.

Fans eagerly anticipate The Bellrays’ upcoming performance at Mission Groove in Romano’s Chicago Pizzeria on February 8, 2025. The band’s unwavering dedication to their music and their roots in Riverside have solidified their status as rock ‘n’ roll royalty in the local music scene, inspiring and influencing generations of aspiring musicians in the community.
