Mares of Thrace Share Single “The Second Stage: Denial” from Upcoming Album “The Loss!”
eturning to the spotlight with a vengeance, Mares of Thrace, based in Calgary, has unveiled their much-anticipated album, entitled ‘The Loss,’ and has released the first fiery single, “The Second Stage: Denial.” The album, which represents the band’s debut with Artoffact Records, is now open for pre-order.
Leading with a disorienting riff and shriek combination, “The Second Stage: Denial” sets a tone of unease that continues steadily throughout the track. The blend of sludge-heavy grind and raw grunge elements creates a chaotic yet methodical atmosphere, delivering a powerful and extended experience that is both distressing and liberating.
Thérèse Lanz’s vocals shine on the track, reflecting a wavering sense of madness reminiscent of David Yow from The Jesus Lizard but with her own unique touch of insanity. Her haunting growls and tormented shrieks complement the thunderous riffs of the song, perfectly harmonized with Casey Rodgers’ potent and forceful drumming. Together, they craft a sonic journey that is simultaneously primal and sophisticated, drawing parallels to bands like ISIS and Elder while staying true to the essence of Mares of Thrace.
Lanz shares her thoughts on the song, stating: “This song pays homage to my love for filthy noise rock and is inspired by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’ stage of grief: Denial. It’s been referred to by live audiences as ‘my favorite song where you yelled, and then stopped, and then yelled again.’”
“The Second Stage: Denial” takes listeners on a rollercoaster of tension and release, guiding them from heavy sludge peaks to a minimalist, tribalistic finale. It serves as a symbol of deconstruction, DIY chaos, and artistic passion. As the track nears its end, it leaves behind a residue of a sonic battlefield—an unrefined and evocative moment meant to touch the soul and ignite mosh pits.
The forthcoming album, ‘The Loss,’ delves into themes of grief, transformation, and endurance, a reflection of Lanz’s personal evolution over the years. Building on the success of previous releases like ‘The Pilgrimage’ (2012), a Polaris Music Prize longlist nominee, and 2022’s ‘The Exile,’ the band forges ahead with Artoffact Records, presenting music that is both cathartic and challenging.
Mares of Thrace continue to push boundaries with their distinctive sound and provocative themes, promising fans a dynamic and electrifying musical journey with ‘The Loss.’
