Ragne Wahlquist, the guitarist and vocalist for Sweden’s groundbreaking band Heavy Load, has recently passed away at the age of 69, as reported by SVT. Alongside his brother Styrbjörn, Ragne founded Heavy Load in Stockholm during the 1970s. Their debut album in 1978, “Full Speed at High Level,” is credited with kickstarting Sweden’s metal scene and influencing future Viking metal bands.

The Wahlquist brothers also established Thunderload Studios, where iconic albums by Candlemass, Hammerfall, and Yngwie Malmsteen were recorded. Even after disbanding, Heavy Load reunited for the 2018 Sweden Rock Festival and released “Riders of the Ancient Storm” in 2023.

At the time of his passing, Ragne and his brother were working on the band’s fifth album, dedicated to him. Our condolences go out to the Wahlquist family and friends during this challenging time.
