“Karl Denson & Robert Searight impressed by Phil Lesh’s unique style”
Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe recently shared a video of a conversation between Karl Denson and drummer Robert “Sput” Searight where they discussed the unique and funky bass playing of Phil Lesh from the Grateful Dead. Sput was amazed by Lesh’s funky style, recalling a time they all played together and how funky it was. Denson agreed, mentioning how creative Lesh was all the time.
Lesh’s bass playing was known for its unbridled freedom, with him rarely repeating himself and always providing a solid foundation with his groove and harmony. Sput noted how Lesh never stayed in the pocket but somehow made it work. Aron Magner from the Disco Biscuits also commented on Lesh’s style, saying it was always moving but somehow worked.
Even though Phil Lesh is no longer with us, his unique style and creativity will continue to inspire musicians for many years to come. His ability to embrace his own voice and be true to himself is what made him a truly great musician. Watch the video below to hear Karl Denson and Robert “Sput” Searight reflect on Phil Lesh’s remarkable playing.
